Aloha and thanks for stopping by!
I started working with Blender about 2 months ago. I’ve always been interested in computer animation and had fantasies when I was younger of working for Pixar or something like that. I figure my time has passed for that, but I’m not going to let it stop me from pursuing it as a hobby.
Like many of you, I chose Blender because it’s open source and free. Sure, I could have gotten a torrent of Maya or 3dmax, but why not just use something that is free by design?
However, the learning curve is incredibly steep!! I thought about getting a book and trying to learn it from the ground up, but I couldn’t find a really good, comprehensive book that had everything I wanted to know. Furthermore, I really felt like every book I looked at didn’t quite give me the instant gratification I was looking for. They would go on and on about different settings, but I just didn’t feel like I was getting anywhere.
So, I turned to the multitude of tutorials on the internet.
I started this blog in hopes that the knowledge I pick up along my own journey might be helpful to others that set out to learn blender. I plan to pass along reviews of tutorials, tips I figure out on my own, and maybe (just maybe) one day make some little tutorials of my own.
I also thought it would be fun to post pictures of my progress as I learn more. Feel free in the comments section to post your own renders!
A little about me: I’m 37, live in Hawaii, have a 5 year old iMac that can’t handle most of what I want to render (8 minute render times for a grass scene with 50,000 hair particles), am married, surf most days, and work at a hospital.
So, there you have it. Hopefully I can steer other newbies in a helpful direction!
